Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon was born into a family of doctors. Parents named the girl after her paternal grandmother.

At 7, Reese starred in a commercial for a flower shop , and at 11 won a talent contest among 10 states. At school, Reese received good grades , additionally engaged in rhythmic gymnastics and was the captain of the support group team.

She studied for two years at Stanford University , and then dropped out of school , to pursue an acting career.
