Gertrude Ederle (1905 – 2003) – swimmer, born October 23, 1905 in the city of New York. The biography of Gertrude Ederle is best known as the biography of the first woman to cross the English Channel.

On August 6, 1926, the American Gertrude Ederle swam across the famous English Channel. Five men had committed a similar feat before. However, Gertrude distinguished herself – her swim time was 14 hours and 31 minutes, which is almost two hours less than previous records. Such a feat brought her fame.

When Gertrude returned to New York, a solemn meeting awaited her. In addition, two bronze medals and one gold medal in swimming at the 1924 Olympics were won in the biography of Gertrude Ederle.

Additional data: Ederle played herself in the 1927 film Swim Girl, Swim. Most sources indicate that Gertrude was born in 1906. However, a researcher of her biography, David Adler, claims that members of the Ederle family confirmed 1905, the year of the swimmer’s birth.
